Rectal Cancer: Protoscope vs Retroflexed Sigmoidscope

The rectum and anus, shown in cross section, were needed to orient the viewer
to the area of interest within the body as well as to show pathology. In this case,
rectal cancer was misdiagnosed as an internal hemorrhoid when viewed with
a protoscope as shown top right. This cancer could have been diagnosed early
on before it spread and was diagnosed much later if the initial view had been
through a retroflexed sigmoidscope as shown in the bottom right.
